The Science
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system,
your brain and spinal cord, controls the function of every cell, tissue,
organ and system of your body. Your body is much like the Internet: your
brain is your computer, your spinal cord is the information highway,
your spinal vertebrae which house nerves, arteries and veins are the
links to your organs, such as heart, lungs, intestines, reproductive
organs. The disruption of the function of these tissues or organs and
the nerve control is called VSC or Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Chiropractic is the science of finding these areas of spinal
malfunction, the art of correcting them and the philosophy of all things
natural as we have been created.
The Art Our doctor masters the
adjusting "art" of chiropractic which includes a comprehensive
evaluation, a review of health history, and arrival at a clear diagnosis
and a recommended specific treatment plan customized for each patient.
This includes specific spinal adjustments. Adjustment describes many
hundreds of ways and techniques of directed and controlled pressure to
restore spinal segments to a more normal position and range of motion,
aiding in increased flexibility, increased immunological function and
increased life energy. Chiropracic is truly an art.
The Philosophy
Chiropractic philosophy recognizes that the power that created the body
can heal the body - as long as there is no interference. The doctor does
not heal you, he is a co-facilitator with you for your body to be put in
the correct environment to heal itself. The main purpose of the
chiropractor is to reduce interference to your inborn, innate healing
ability.

A
vertebral misalignment is called a
subluxation. If it is left untreated, the body will
lock the joint in place and the function controlled by the nerve
involved is permenantly disrupted. Over a long period of time, spinal
degeneration occurs, setting the stage for severe disability and
illness. Chiropractic care aligns and frees the joint so the body
can heal naturally and full health can be restored. With good habits and
regular Chiropractic care, good health can be retained throughout life!
Virtually all your body functions are controlled through
your nervous system. The brain and spinal cord are so important that
they are completely protected by bone - the only organs so protected.
When the spinal vertebrae become misaligned, body functions are
disrupted by pressure on the nerves that control them. This causes many
symptoms that are seemingly unrelated to back pain.

- Exercise Regularly? This does not have to be anything overly
strenuous. Something as simple as a daily walk can make a huge
difference.
- Eat A Healthy Diet? Proper nutrients allow the body to repair
itself easier
- Maintain Good Posture? Are you sitting up straight as you read
this?
- Stretch Your Spine Before And After Sports? This will also
help to loosen up the surrounding muscles.
- Don't Overload Your Backpack Or Purse? Remember to carry it
over both shoulders to balance the load (if possible).
- Stretch Your Legs And Back After Each Hour Of Sitting? Whether
in a car or at a desk, stretching regularly will help to keep you
from tightening up or injuring yourself further.
- Never Cradle The Phone Between Your Neck And Shoulder
- Sleep On Your back Or Side, Not On Your Stomach? This helps to
keep your spine in line and reduces the risk of hurting your neck
while you sleep.
- Invest In A Good Chair, Pillow And Mattress? When you think
about the amount of time you use these things each day, it's worth
it.
- Have Regular Spinal Check-Ups? It's much easier to prevent a
problem than to correct one.

Proper
spinal alignment is essential for healthy and pain-free living.
When there is a trauma to a joint, one of the ways your body
responds is the stabilization of the area by formation of new
bone. With time, calcium deposits build up, eventually as abnormal
bony growth. This arthritic 'splinting' of bones is nature's
attempt to stabilize the injured joint. If left untreated,
subluxation takes the form of ongoing degeneration known as 'subluxation
degeneration' and can lead to chronic health related problems.
As these x-rays show,
there is a progressive degeneration that can be halted, or slowed,
with proper chiropractic care.
NORMAL
Proper spinal curves permit normal turning and bending.
Openings between joints allow nerve roots to exit the spine
without interference. The edges of the bones are smooth and
well defined. Equal disc spacing is a sign of healthy spinal
function. |
PHASE
ONE
Loss or normal curves and misalignment restrict or exaggerate
normal ranges of motion. ligament and muscle strength is
reduced. Even with nerve irritation and soft tissue
inflammation, pain or other obvious symptoms may not be
present. |
PHASE
TWO
Years of accumulated calcium deposition are now visible. Bone
spurs attempt to fuse malfunctioning joints. Adjacent surfaces
are rough and uneven. Joint instability is accompanied by
continued nerve irritation and disc degeneration. |
PHASE
THREE
After years of neglect, complete fusion has immobilized the
joint. Obstructed nerve openings cause permanent nerve
irritation as soft tissue degeneration continues. This
irreversible condition is usually associated with other
chronic health problems. |

The
term subluxation means minor misalignment however the affects on the
human body as a result of a subluxation on the upper cervical spine
can be far from minor. In the simplest of terms, a subluxation is
when one or more vertebrae (bones in your spine) move out of line
and create pressure on spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves
that come out from the vertebrae in your spine. Pressure on the
nerves can cause interference with the signals traveling through
them - leading to numerous health related problem.
Chiropractors commonly
recognize five categories of components present in the Vertebral
Subluxation Complex (VSC).
- Spinal
Kinesiopathology - is where the bones of
the spine become stuck, don't move enough, or move too much.
-
Neuropathophysiology (abnormal nervous system function) -
nerves can become overexcited and hyperactive. Due to the way the
spine is engineered, abnormal spinal function can irritate, pinch,
rub or choke the delicate tissue of the spinal cord and nerve
roots.
-
Myopathology (Abnormal Muscle Function) - is when
over-developed muscles on one side of the spine cause individual
vertebrae to rotate and lose proper function. When muscle function
declines muscles that support the spine respond in different ways,
the spine can weaken or even atrophy.
-
Histiopathology (Abnormal soft tissue function) -
inflammation and swelling due to injured disc accompany the
accumulation of blood and lymph - causing a rise in temperature.
-
Pathophysiology - when there is a trauma
to a joint, one of the ways your body responds is the
stabilization of the area by forming new bone! With time, calcium
deposits build up, eventually as abnormal bony growth. This
arthritic 'splinting' of bones is nature's attempt to stabilize
the injured joint.
Due to the
intricacies of the nervous system, more research is being conducted
in the areas of hormonal involvement, aging, immune system response,
even genetic consequences. The Vertebral Subluxation Complex may be
one of the most regular yet overlooked source of health problems.
Chiropractor are
trained in identifying and treating vertebral subluxations. This is
done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically
designed to correct the vertebral subluxations in your spine.
Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of
training to be the experts at correcting subluxations. |

BOOM! You watch as your child falls down while learning
to walk. You put a Band-Aid on a skinned knee when
bicycle lessons go awry. You wipe away your child's
tears, but there's more... |

|
Infants and children subject their spines to a
variety of insults, which are all a normal part of
growing up:
-
The traumatic
birth process
-
Falling down
dozens of times while learning to walk
-
Playground
roughhousing
-
Sports or P.E.
class
-
Poor posture,
badly designed classroom furniture
-
Skateboards,
roller skates, bicycles
-
Walking on snow
and ice
-
Stairs, automobile
accidents

Other sources of
childhood injury

At first, no injury may be apparent.
Young bodies are amazingly resilient, but once a spinal bone
is displaced, however slightly, compensation begins to
happen throughout the spinal column, causing further
misalignment. In addition to these problems, small
congenital defects can grow into big problems if not
detected and treated early.
The old saying,
"As the twig is bent, so
grows the tree" is completely valid for
early life. Children should receive regular Chiropractic
care as part of their normal health care. Most problems in
life are easier and less costly to address in their early
stages, and spinal alignment is no exception.
There is no minimum age for Chiropractic care.
Chiropractors receive special training in pediatric and
infant care, along with advanced knowledge in nutrition and
exercise management. This is to give children the
opportunity to grow with optimum Chiropractic health in the
formative years.
Full health is a result of every organ,
bone, and muscle working together, which is coordinated by
the nervous system. It's essential to maintain the proper
nerve function and flow that controls every organ in the
body during growth and maturation. The immune system also is
directly controlled by the nervous system.
"An Ounce Of Prevention..."
Chiropractors urge
you to investigate regular Chiropractic checkups for YOUR
children. With consistent care, you will be satisfied
knowing that their "life-flowing" energy channel is open,
that cellular growth is normal, and that their growing body
will not fall subject unaware, to disharmony and dis-ease.
It is important to note that the immune system (defense
system), which produces white blood cells (anti-bodies) and
fights disease, is directly dependent on the condition of
the Nervous System for its proper functioning.
Chronic illnesses
in childhood and the teens will barely exist as good health
is maintained through regular Chiropractic care.
During puberty, as
the body prepares for adulthood and the child bearing years,
glandular secretions, which are directly dependent on the
nerve network, are flowing at their optimum, creating the
right hormone balances in your child's body. These balances
affect your child's attitude and disposition as he or she
struggles through the active and stressful teen years.*
 Regular
Chiropractic checkups are an important part of the best
preventative health maintenance!
